Content Scrambling System (CSS)

The Content Scrambling System (CSS) is a digital rights management (DRM) and encryption method developed to prevent unauthorized copying of DVD video content. Employed on most commercially produced DVD-Video discs, CSS works by encrypting the DVD’s content and only allowing access to it after the DVD player has successfully authenticated with the DVD drive. While CSS was initially effective at curbing piracy, it has been criticized for its vulnerability to decryption tools, leading content creators and distributors to explore more robust DRM technologies to protect their intellectual property.
